Maverick Director Shankar has proved time and again that he is just not making films for entertainment but for spreading some social message along with it. His earlier movies like ‘Bharatheeyudu’, ’Oke Okkadu’ etc carried such messages as well. While ‘Bharatheeyudu’ was on corruption in the bureaucrats, ‘oke okkadu’ highlighted the political system. He has now come up with yet another message on the impact of technology on the nature and how it is damaging the natural beings like birds.
He created a character Pakshi Raaja who takes revenge on the society which was the cause of death for many birds, due to cell phone radiations. This character of Pakshi Raaja is said to be an ornithologist who commits suicide being not able to change the society and stop thousands of birds on becoming a pray to the radiations of cell phones. Pakshi Raaja’s character is said to be inspired by a real life ornithologist Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali who is known to be the ‘Bird Man of India’. He was a famous ornithologist who was the first to conduct systematic bird surveys across India and has written many books on birds. He was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1958 and Padma Vibhushan in 1976. He was the one who was instrumental in setting up Bombay Natural History Society and Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.
Akshay has portrayed this role with high conviction, though the initial choices for this role were Kamal Hassan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. However this role of Akshay would remain in memories of people who watched 2.O for the generations to come.
